Easy Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Iced Coffee – like Starbucks!

A couple days ago I shared our new favorite homemade syrup – a brown sugar syrup, just like the one being used at coffeehouses to make drinks like the delicious Starbucks Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso!

The brown sugar syrup gives the drinks a rich, caramely sweetness, sometimes verging on a maple taste, while the shaking gives it a lightness and froth on top for a really delicious treat.

So, of course, we had to go and make our own Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso, right?

But, we’re a little lazy around here – and that’s why we used a little hack to make this the easiest copycat of all time. Let’s get started!

The Key to the Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Iced Coffee:

The hero of this beverage is the homemade brown sugar syrup. It’s just 2 or 3 ingredients and less than 10 minutes and you’ve got your own, delicious brown sugar syrup that will last you a few weeks in the fridge (if you don’t drink it all first). Without fillers and preservatives, you’ll notice a fresh, delicious taste unlike anything you can buy at the store.

The difference between the syrup and just adding brown sugar is that the syrup will dissolve into the drink, rather than settle into the bottom. That way, the entire drink has the same flavor from top to bottom, rather than than having sweeter patches here and there (no thanks).

While we wrote an entire post on how to make this syrup, we’ll give you a brief recap here to get you off to a great start. The syrup is this super easy brown sugar syrup recipe. It’s a 1:1 brown sugar and water ratio. Some recipes split the sugar into white and brown, but I preferred the taste with just dark brown sugar.

You can make it with light brown, but the flavor is richer with dark brown sugar. Simmer the water and sugar until the sugar is fully dissolved. Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract if you have it on hand. Muy delicioso.

The good news is that once you make it, you can figure out how to make it your way. Need it sweeter? Add more sugar. Need it more less rich? Use light brown sugar. Want to use alternative sweeteners? I’m sure you can figure it out. If you’re making it; you can customize it. You feel me?

Then, once you’ve got your sugar ready – get the rest of your ingredients: iced coffee or cold brew coffee, ice, milk of choice (I use oatmilk), and a shaker, and we’re ready to party.

Making the Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso:

To make this the easiest brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso ever – we cheat and use iced coffee or Starbucks Cold Brew, which we always have on hand.

starbucks cold brew

Yes, you can use espresso if you have an espresso machine and you would need 2-3 shots of espresso if that’s your choice. The taste is going to be similar when you’re finished, so just use what you have. After you decide what you’re using, it’s time to assemble!

Add some ice to your shaker or your glass, if you’re using your glass as a gauge for pouring. Add about 1 cup of iced coffee/cold brew or 2-3 shots of espresso and 1/2 cup of water, (2 shots if you want it less strong and 3 shots of espresso if you want it strong). We used cold brew – because we like to keep it simple

Then, add 2-3 tablespoons of your brown sugar syrup. Again, customize this to your taste. Do you prefer it sweeter? Add more to taste. Really want to taste your coffee? Add less.

Then, add 1/4 cup of your oatmilk. You could use other milk or even half ‘n half, too. You do you, booboo.

You can also add 1/4 tsp of cinnamon or nutmeg if you want to really copy the Starbucks version. We are pro- cinnamon around here, but do what works for you!

Stir it up.

Now, if it’s in a shaker, it’s time to shake. Shake it real good. If you’ve made it in a glass, pour it into a shaker, shake and then put it back in your glass. Stare at that froth, baby. That’s the good stuff.

I mean…. all the heart eye emojis, right?

Questions About the Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Iced Coffee:

What if I don’t have oatmilk?

Use whatever milk you have on hand and like the taste of in coffee. Oatmilk has such a creamy consistency and froths up nicely, but we have also used half ‘n half, almond milk and heavy whipping cream!

What if I don’t have a shaker?

Make it work! You can use a mason jar with a lid. You can use a blender bottle you use for protein shakes. Anything that has a lid that seals without leaking can be used to shake this up.

What if I don’t like cinnamon or nutmeg?

Don’t use it! We’ve made it without it and it’s still delicious.

Does it taste different with espresso or cold brew?

We prefer cold brew or iced coffee based drinks because it is just so easy. But, both are really good. Use what you have.

How long do I have to shake it?

Anywhere from 10-20 seconds should get you that nice froth on top.

We hope you loved our easy Starbucks Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso copycat. We know we’re not so exact with the measurements, but honestly, the best part of making it at home is making it your way. You know what you like and if you want more or less sweetener, more or less milk, stronger or less coffee.

Have fun with it; get it just right. Then, enjoy it that way again and again.
